Bird Sensory bin

Bird sensory bin. ~ Bird seed, hay to represent a nest, toy scoop, rooster measuring cup, wooden bird puzzle pieces and a chirping chick. While she played I read her the book, "Wise up, Silly Owl".

Beach Discovery Bottle

Before our trip to the beach, I wanted to teach her a bit about it first.
We did several different activities to learn about the beach.
This is a beach discovery bottle made from a smart water bottle.
Inside is sand, mini shells, oil (baby oil would be best because it is clear - but we were out), blue water & glitter. Then I super glued the lid on and put stickers on the outside. super easy and
she loved it!

Beach sensory tray

Before we went to the beach, I wanted to try to show her a bit about it first.
One of the things we did was play with homemade moon sand & shells, and we read
the book, There was an old lady who swallowed a shell.

Homemade moon sand.
1cup play sand, 1/2 cup cornstarch & 1/4 cup water.
Mix well & add shells.

Icy Fun

It's been pretty hot in this area the past 2 weeks, so we wanted
to find a "cool" way to have fun. What do you think of when you think of Cool?
ICE!

I dyed some pasta for play/lunch, so I put a bit of that into a 9x13 pan,
filled with water & froze.

Once it was broken apart, she inspected the pieces of
spaghetti that were poking out.

I froze two of her bead necklaces in a heart shaped pan
with a glitter..because, who doesn't love glitter?

Of course she had to feel the ice with her feet. :)

I froze one of her toy cows in a bowl of water. :)

Lots more fun summer ideas coming!

The Water Blob!!

This is seriously the coolest (no pun intended!) thing we have done so far!!
It's called a Water Blob! I've seen it on several different blogs
so we needed to try it!

What you need: Plastic sheeting, duct tape and a hose.
You can also add in food color (it will fade as the day goes on),
soft squishy toys and glitter. Here's the deal: spread out the plastic, fold over and
line up all sides. Duct tape the edges VERY well, leaving a small opening for the hose.
Fill with water, then either remove hose and close up hole with tape OR leave the hose in
and tape around it to seal. We left the hose in, that way if we sprung a leak the blob
would be able to stay full.

My daughters enjoying the coolness of the blob

fun to walk on

fun to jump on

Yes, we had to add shaving cream.
(We add shaving cream to everything!)

I had to share this picture, just because I think
it looks like they are having a standoff. lol.

Slipping and sliding all over the water blob!

My older daughter pulling my younger daughter around
the blob!

My girls and my niece really enjoyed the blob!
If you don't try anything else on my blog, you need to try this!!

Colored Pasta for crafts..with no rubbing alcohol

We made colored pasta for crafts again,
only this time instead of using rubbing alcohol,
we used vinegar. So it won't hurt kids if they accidentally get a
piece in their mouth.
For how to dye pasta, see this post.

Soap Slime

Soap Slime! Slippery, soapy,
slimy, bubbly fun! So easy to make!
Grate 3 bars of IVORY soap into a large bowl.
Add some hot water and beat with a mixer. Let sit for about an hour.
Then get out the whisks, potato mashers, and other fun tools.
It will be frothy, slimy and bubbly.
Your hands will smell fantastic as well!!

Snow...in summer??

It LOOKS like Snow.... it FEELS like Snow...
but wait! It's May!
It's actually baking soda with a bit of water mixed it.
Place it in the freezer for a few hours and it gets icy cold...
feels like snow, freezy and crunchy!

Balloon sensory activity

Fill balloons with different objects for kids
to feel, squeeze and play with.
Then, to take it a step further, take photos of the items that
the balloons are filled with, and see if they can match what is inside
to the pictures. You can leave them the way they are to use over and over, OR
after they match them, let them cut them open with safety scissors and see if they
were correct!

Water beads in the pool!

We play with water beads almost every day, and there really are endless ways
and places to use them. Today, we decided to put them in the kiddie pool!

Walking on the water beads before adding water. They were squishy and
bounced out of the pool, all over the ground when she jumped! (She found this hysterical, by the way.)
Adding water to the kiddie pool with the water beads

The water beads looked really neat once the pool was full.
They were no longer slippery once the water was added.

We were expecting a storm that evening, so we dumped the pool -
water beads and all - in the grass.

She liked walking in the water beads in the grass as well.

What about you?  What are some new ways that YOU'VE played with
water beads lately?

Glowing Slime!

Today we made slime, using our regular recipe.
(1 cup Elmers glue, 1 cup liquid starch)
But this time, I divided it and added neon paint to it.
Then we took it into a dark room,
turned on the black light & enjoyed the glowing slime!

Here is the slime, when she was done playing.

All of the colors mixed together, under the black light.

(*A black light is needed for this to glow. They sell at Walmart for only $10)

Tapioca... not just for eating!

I had a box of minute tapioca in the cupboard that I knew I wasn't going to use
because we had just bought a new box, and this one was in there a while.
I almost threw it away, but then I thought.. could we play with it?
Sure, why not give it a try?
So I poured a little into 4 small cups, added food color and just a bit of water.
This is what we got....

it's bumpy, moldable (but pretty stiff) and fun to play with.

It kind of reminded me of floam... kind of.

We added a bit more water to it, but it was pretty set,
so it didn't really change much. She squashed it with her mini
toy bunny.

She had fun burying her little bunny in balls of it and pulling the
balls apart to get her bunny out.

Soap playdough

Soap dough: 1 cup cornstarch, 1 cup handsoap knead and play like playdough. (We played with it for about an hour. Went back 2 hrs later and it was kind of dry so we added a few drops of water. Idk if this would store well.)
